Our Story

Ordered by General James Oglethorpe in 1732, the Tybee Island Light Station has been a beacon for mariners for over 285 years. This historic site, featuring all its original support buildings, stands as one of America’s most intact light stations.

Our Impact

For over 45 years, the Tybee Island Historical Society has dedicated itself to preserving the lighthouse and educating over 120,000 visitors annually. With over $1 million invested in preservation over the last 8 years, an additional $1.6 million is planned for the coming year.
