The Story of Trekking for Kids
Trekking for Kids began as a simple dinner conversation in early 2005 between siblings Jose Montero and Ana Maria. As they shared their plans to hike the Inca Trail in Peru, they reflected on their travels in the developing world and the pressing needs they had witnessed. This sparked an idea: why not combine their love for adventure with a mission to help those in need?
Inspired by their father, Pepe, an orphan from the Spanish Civil War, they decided to focus their efforts on supporting orphans. The concept evolved into a unique model where trekkers would raise funds prior to their expeditions, with all proceeds directed towards infrastructure projects at selected orphanages. This innovative approach led to the establishment of Trekking for Kids, Inc. just two months before their inaugural trek to Machu Picchu.
Since then, TFK has transformed from a small initiative into a thriving organization, driven by the passion of volunteers and the generosity of donors. With a mission of "Improving Today, Securing Tomorrow…One Step at a Time," TFK has organized purpose-driven treks across four continents, making a significant impact on the lives of thousands of orphaned and at-risk children.
