In 2015, the Lexington-Fayette Urban County Council established the Tree Canopy Committee to assess and enhance the urban tree canopy in Lexington. This initiative evolved into Trees Lexington! in 2016, achieving 501(c)(3) status in 2017. Led by an Executive Board, the organization is dedicated to advancing urban forestry goals and launching innovative projects to enrich the city’s tree canopy.
Trees Lexington plants trees and inspires community growth. Through tree plantings, giveaways, and educational workshops, the organization aims to increase the tree canopy from 25% to 30% over the next 10-15 years, enhancing public health and preserving the city’s character.
