Inspired by Columbia College Professor John Torrey, it has evolved into a vibrant community of professional and amateur botanists, students, and nature enthusiasts. The society has been dedicated to promoting interest in botany and disseminating information on all phases of plant science. With a rich history of publishing the Journal of the Torrey Botanical Society since 1870, it continues to engage the public through free lectures and field trips.
