The Legacy of Toberman Neighborhood Center
In the heart of Los Angeles, the Toberman Neighborhood Center stands as a beacon of hope and transformation. Founded by James and Emma Toberman in 1903, this organization was born from personal tragedy and a profound commitment to community service. Originally established as the Toberman Settlement House, it quickly became a cornerstone for social services, dedicated to protecting and nurturing the most vulnerable members of society.
Over the years, the center has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. In 1937, it relocated to the Harbor community of San Pedro, reaffirming its mission to serve families and youth. The dawn of the 21st century marked a significant turning point with the launch of the Toberman Neighborhood Center in 2007, following a successful $8 million capital campaign. This modern 36,000-square-foot campus symbolizes the enduring legacy of the Tobermans and their vision for a supportive community.
