About Three Oaks Center

Established in 1992, Three Oaks Center emerged from the collective concern of community leaders in St. Mary’s County regarding the rising homelessness among men. The vision became a reality in January 1996 when the first shelter opened its doors in Lexington Park, providing essential services to those in need.

Over the years, the Center recognized the necessity to expand its services to include women and families, as well as individuals facing severe mental health challenges. In 1999, a significant step was taken when the Center applied for and received a grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to provide permanent housing for the mentally ill. This initiative marked the beginning of a series of successful HUD grants that have allowed the Center to enhance its offerings.

In 2003, the Center made a substantial investment in the community by purchasing and rehabilitating ten townhouses, transforming them into supportive transitional housing for families. This project not only provided much-needed housing but also contributed to the revitalization of the neighborhood.

Three Oaks Center remains committed to collaborating with other local organizations to maximize resources and improve services for the homeless population in St. Mary’s County. By participating in community meetings and sharing information, the Center strives to create a more supportive environment for those in need.
