Our Story

Founded in 1985, Thousand Currents emerged from a recognition of the inequities in international development. While billions were allocated for global initiatives, grassroots communities were often overlooked. This gap highlighted a fundamental issue of equity: those most affected by challenges often receive the least support. Over the past three decades, Thousand Currents has dedicated itself to resourcing frontline communities in Africa, Asia, the Pacific, Latin America, and the Caribbean. By providing direct grants and influencing other funders, Thousand Currents ensures that grassroots movements receive the necessary resources to thrive.

With an investment of over $31 million in 1,000 grassroots formations, Thousand Currents has fostered connections that empower collective change. Our partners engage with over 200 million individuals, including women, Indigenous peoples, small farmers, and youth, driving transformative social movements across the Global South.
