The Story of The Third Place
The Third Place originated as a vital organizing space for the Martin Luther King Junior Fellows, a local leadership group for Black youth. This initiative aimed to create a permanent meeting space for high school students in the Portland area to collaborate on community-based initiatives. As gentrification escalated, the need for affordable office and meeting spaces became increasingly urgent for single-staffed, Black-led nonprofits and businesses.
In response to the challenges faced by the community, The Third Place opened its doors in 2017, providing a co-working suite designed specifically for Black entrepreneurs, emerging leaders, and creatives. This space fosters a sense of safety and affirmation, allowing members to share resources, expertise, and engage in cooperative economics.
Since its inception, The Third Place has supported ten emerging businesses and nonprofits by offering office space, training, education, and a robust community of peers. Additionally, it has organized statewide sector groups in law, health and wellness, conservation, and education, all aimed at promoting racial equity and justice.
