Our Story

Theatre of the Oppressed NYC (TONYC) was founded in 2011 by Katy Rubin, who trained with Augusto Boal in Rio. Recognizing a lack of effective 'popular theatre' in New York, Rubin established the Jan Hus Homeless Theatre Troupe, now known as Concrete Justice. Since then, TONYC has expanded to meet the urgent needs of communities facing oppression, using theatre as a tool for social change.

Our Impact

TONYC partners with marginalized communities to inspire transformative action through theatre, engaging audiences in a creative laboratory to rehearse practical actions against oppression.
