Our Story

Founded in 1992 by visionaries Dong-il Lee, Rick Shiomi, Martha B. Johnson, and Diane Espaldon, Theater Mu emerged as a beacon for Asian American voices in the Twin Cities theater community. At a time when Asian American representation was virtually nonexistent, Mu has grown to become one of the largest Asian American theater companies in the United States, and the largest in the Midwest. Through dynamic performances and community outreach, Mu serves as a vital resource for Asian American artists, fostering connections and belonging for individuals of all ages and ethnicities.

Impact

Theater Mu's mission transcends the stage. Contributions beyond ticket sales enhance audience accessibility, promote artistic equity, and drive technological innovation. The generosity of community members ensures that future generations of Asian American artists benefit from workshops, classes, and camps.
