Our Story

Founded in 1911 by Edward Jesson, The West Annapolis Fire and Improvement Company began as a volunteer fire department in the quaint Village of West Annapolis. After facing challenges in its early years, the organization was reorganized in 1920, marking the start of the Annual Fair, which evolved into a beloved carnival event. The WAVFD made significant strides in 1922 with the purchase of its first fire apparatus, a one-ton Chevrolet truck, and in 1930, it acquired its first ambulance, expanding its services to include medical emergencies.

Throughout the years, WAVFD has adapted to the needs of the community, including the formation of a junior fire brigade during World War II when many members were drafted. Women joined the ranks in the 1970s, further diversifying the team. Today, WAVFD operates from its location on Jennifer Road, continuing a proud tradition of volunteer service to the community.
