Our Story

Forty years ago, 7122 Tuxedo Street was the childhood home of Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Stephen Henderson. In 2012, he returned to find it in disrepair, like many homes in Detroit. With support from former classmates and Marygrove College, Henderson began renovating the house, transforming it into a community center. This initiative marked the beginning of The Tuxedo Project, focusing on revitalizing one house, one block, and one neighborhood at a time.

Our Impact

The Tuxedo Project aims to revitalize one of Detroit's most isolated neighborhoods by increasing access to resources centered on five anchors of community: the Arts, education, food sustainability, housing security, and economic opportunity.
