Transforming Lives on Skid Row
Founded by Pastor Stephen Cue Jn-Marie, The Shaw Community Transformation Corporation, known as Creating Justice LA (CJLA), emerged from a deep need for change on Skid Row. Originally a hip hop artist, Pastor Cue left the music industry in 1994 to establish The Row Church, affectionately dubbed "The Church Without Walls." For over 17 years, this church has provided not only spiritual nourishment but also meals to those in need every Friday.
Recognizing the detrimental effects of traditional capitalism on marginalized communities, Pastor Cue launched CJLA to promote justice through creative expressions. The organization also operates The Hip Hop Smoothie Shop, a cultural health innovation space aimed at economically empowering Skid Row and other forgotten communities.
Under the leadership of Development/Artistic Director Kayo Anderson, CJLA is developing the Creating Justice Artivist Village, a collective of Skid Row artists dedicated to presenting community-led visual and performing arts across Los Angeles County. Both Pastor Cue and Kayo have firsthand experience with houselessness, which fuels their mission to transform the narrative surrounding this issue into one of growth and empowerment.
