Our Story

The Sewing Machine Project was inspired by the aftermath of the devastating tsunami in Southeast Asia in March 2005. Founder Margaret Jankowski learned of a woman who lost her sewing machine, her only means of income, during the storm. This story ignited a mission to collect and distribute sewing machines to those in need, starting in Madison, Wisconsin. Since then, over 4000 machines have been delivered to individuals and community centers, helping to rebuild lives and foster self-sufficiency through sewing.

Impact

With over 1200 sewing machines delivered to the greater New Orleans area, The Sewing Machine Project collaborates with various nonprofit groups to serve underserved populations, empowering individuals to build self-confidence and improve their livelihoods.
