Our Story

Founded in 1974 by compassionate members of the Dilworth United Methodist Church, The Relatives began as a humble shelter in a church basement. Witnessing children sleeping on benches along East Boulevard and in Freedom Park, these parishioners created a safe haven for youth in crisis. The name 'The Relatives' reflects the spirit of family and support that defines the organization, as many young people preferred to say they were staying with relatives rather than admitting to their struggles with homelessness.

Today, The Relatives operates the East Boulevard Youth Crisis Center, the only emergency shelter in Mecklenburg County dedicated to youth ages 7-17. Over the years, the organization has expanded its services, including the On Ramp Resource Center for young adults aged 16-24, offering counseling, GED tutoring, and employment readiness programs. In 2016, The Relatives launched a unique housing program for homeless young adults aged 18-24, providing essential support to a hidden population in need.

Impact

With a 50-year legacy of service, The Relatives is a beacon of hope for young people facing crises. The organization has successfully transitioned 96% of youth to safe, stable environments, ensuring they feel secure while their challenges are addressed.
