Our Story

The Play Brigade's journey began with a child named Harper, who was born with a debilitating spinal cord injury. Her parents, Justin and Dawn Oates, quickly learned that while Harper faced physical challenges, her spirit and desire to play were unyielding. They discovered that the real barrier to inclusion was not disability itself, but the design of spaces and activities that often excluded children like Harper.

Determined to change this narrative, The Play Brigade was founded with a mission to create inclusive play environments where all children can thrive together. By advocating for universal design in playgrounds and recreational spaces, The Play Brigade has influenced the development of several local playgrounds, ensuring they cater to children of all abilities.

In addition to promoting inclusive play, The Play Brigade has expanded its mission to advocate for disability equity and inclusion in healthcare and education. This holistic approach preserves the civil and human rights of all individuals, regardless of their abilities.

Impact

Every day, The Play Brigade educates and advocates for disability equity, making strides in healthcare, education, and recreation.
