Multicultural Center of Marin

Our Story

The Multicultural Center of Marin began with a vision to foster community among the residents of the Canal district, a vibrant neighborhood in Marin County that has historically welcomed immigrants. In the early 2000s, the San Francisco Foundation recognized the potential of this diverse area and selected it for the Daniel E. Koshland Civic Unity Program fellowship. This initiative aimed to empower community members to address local challenges collaboratively.

Douglas Mundo, a recent immigrant from El Salvador, emerged as a leader in this effort. Alongside other community leaders, he initiated listening sessions that laid the groundwork for the Canal Welcome Center, established in 2002. By 2007, this center became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, with Mundo as its executive director.

Over the years, the Canal Welcome Center evolved into a vital community hub, offering a space for residents to connect and share their experiences. New programs were developed to support entrepreneurship, address social concerns, and celebrate cultural identities. As the center expanded, so did the diversity of the populations it served, welcoming immigrants from Brazil, Africa, the Philippines, the Middle East, Vietnam, and Latin America.

In 2018, the Canal Welcome Center rebranded as the Multicultural Center of Marin, reflecting its broader mission to embrace the cultural wisdom of Marin County's immigrant communities. Today, the center stands as a beacon of hope, providing training, mentorship, and community organizing opportunities that empower individuals to come together and create positive, community-rooted solutions.
