Our Story

In the early 1970s, the Portland immigrant Muslim community was just beginning to take shape. With no mosques and a small, dispersed population, Muslims primarily socialized within their ethnic groups. In 1975, five young Pakistani families began meeting bi-weekly to study the Qur’an and discuss practicing Islam in an American context. These gatherings not only deepened their religious commitments but also helped instill Islamic values in their American-born children, blending cultural traditions with their new American lives.

Impact

The Islamic Society of Greater Portland serves as a vital platform for masjids, refugees, immigrants, and interfaith initiatives. However, the current building cannot meet the growing needs of the community.
