Transforming Detroit Through Art

In 1986, artist Tyree Guyton returned to Heidelberg Street on Detroit’s East Side, where he witnessed the devastation of his childhood neighborhood. Inspired by the loss of three brothers to street violence, Guyton, alongside his grandfather and local children, began cleaning up vacant lots. With a paintbrush in hand, he transformed these spaces into a vibrant outdoor art environment, turning abandoned houses into gigantic art sculptures. This initiative, known as the Heidelberg Project, aims to inspire appreciation for artistic expression while improving the social and economic health of the community.

For over 35 years, the Heidelberg Project has renewed the human spirit and rebuilt the community, providing jobs and a space for interaction and reflection.
