Our Story
The Great Allegheny Passage Conservancy was established to coordinate and fund the renovation of former railroad structures into a scenic trail system. Beginning with a 26.75-mile section of the Western Maryland Railway in 1978, dedicated volunteers have constructed segments of the trail, culminating in the completion of the Great Allegheny Passage in 2013. This world-class path offers breathtaking views and a unique outdoor experience.
Impact
The Great Allegheny Passage provides a 150-mile trail for biking and hiking, significantly enhancing outdoor recreation and tourism in the region. It also serves as a vital segment of the Potomac Heritage National Scenic Trail.
