Our Story
In the early 1970s, horses across the United States faced a dire threat from Equine Infectious Anemia (EIA). The Coggins test, developed in 1972, became a crucial tool in identifying carriers of this disease. Susan Young, the founder's grandmother, managed a ranch where 30% of the horses tested positive for EIA. Rather than resorting to euthanasia, she relocated these healthy horses to a safe haven, dedicating her efforts to research and care. Established as a nonprofit in 1987, F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Horse Rescue & Sanctuary continues this legacy, providing sanctuary for EIA-positive horses and advocating for their humane treatment.
