Our Story
In 1985, a small group of passionate citizens gathered in a basement in Howell, Michigan, with a shared vision of creating a community theatre group. Over the past thirty years, the Community Theatre of Howell (CTH) has blossomed into a vibrant hub for the performing arts, engaging families, youth, adults, and senior citizens alike. Originally known as the Mid-Michigan Performing Arts Company and Howell Community Theater, the name Community Theatre of Howell has become synonymous with high-quality theatre programs.
Each year, CTH offers a diverse array of productions, including three to four main stage shows, an annual musical featuring a large cast of all ages, and a unique “School Show” performed entirely by youth for local students. In response to community needs, CTH has also developed shorter rehearsal programs, such as the “WCTH” performances of old-time radio shows, which resonate particularly with senior citizens who fondly remember these classic broadcasts.
During the summer months, CTH presents “Black Box” performances—smaller, edgier productions that challenge both performers and audiences. Additionally, four summer camps provide youth with opportunities to learn acting, dance, and vocal performance, fostering the next generation of theatre enthusiasts. The High School Camp encourages campers to take the lead in selecting and producing their material, further enhancing their skills.
CTH is committed to making the performing arts accessible to all community members. Scholarships are available for students wishing to attend camps or pursue advanced degrees in theatre arts, and financial assistance is offered to ensure that everyone can participate in programs, regardless of their financial situation. The Board of Directors prioritizes financial stability through strong oversight, memberships, patron donations, and corporate sponsorships, ensuring that CTH can continue to provide high-quality productions for years to come.
