In January 1986, the tragic explosion of the space shuttle Challenger united families of the astronauts with educators to create a lasting tribute. This collaboration led to the establishment of the Challenger Center for Space Science Education. The Challenger Learning Center of Maine opened its doors in February 2004, dedicated to providing hands-on discovery and education in STEM fields.
