Our Story
The Black History Museum and Cultural Center of Virginia (BHMVA) was founded in 1981 and opened its doors to the public in 1991. Located in the historic Leigh Street Armory, the museum serves as a vital space for sharing, interpreting, and preserving the rich history and culture of African Americans. Through dedicated efforts, BHMVA aims to restore cultural pride and foster unity within the diaspora, highlighting often untold stories.
