Our Story

The Big Garden began in 2005 as a program of United Methodist Ministries, initially funded by the USDA's Community Food Project. The goal was to create 12 community gardens in three years. Five years later, the initiative expanded to 26 gardens in the metro-Omaha area and introduced a sister project, The Big Rural Garden, in Southeast Nebraska. Today, it encompasses over 200 community gardens across metro-Omaha and rural communities in Nebraska, Iowa, and Kansas, partnering with local congregations, schools, and non-profits.

Impact

The Big Garden aims to reduce hunger by increasing access to fresh, healthy produce and teaching individuals how to grow, cook, and preserve their own food, thereby enhancing food sovereignty in the community.
