Our Story

The Texas Fair Defense Project (TFDP) was founded in 2006 by Andrea Marsh with a mission to combat the criminalization of poverty in Texas. This organization envisions a justice system that respects the dignity and civil rights of all individuals, regardless of income, race, or gender. By engaging in litigation, policy advocacy, and community lawyering, TFDP works to disentangle individuals and communities from the criminal legal system while holding system actors accountable.

Impact

In 2018, TFDP successfully assisted over 650 individuals in discharging or waiving their traffic ticket debts, relieving a total of $244,159 in criminal justice debt. The organization has also achieved a landmark victory in the U.S. Supreme Court, showcasing its effectiveness in advocating for low-income Texans.
