Our Story

Founded in the mid-1980s, Tenants and Workers United (TWU) emerged in Alexandria, Virginia, to combat mass evictions of low-income renters. Mobilizing residents against gentrification, TWU led a class-action lawsuit that successfully halted evictions and has since expanded its mission to include affordable housing, health equity, education justice, police accountability, and immigrant rights.

Impact

With over $100 million won in living wage jobs, affordable housing, healthcare, and public education resources, TWU has significantly transformed the lives of low-income communities in Northern Virginia.
