Our Story

Founded in 1946 by Edna Ruth Byler, Ten Thousand Villages began as a small initiative selling hand-embroidered textiles from Puerto Rico. This effort has blossomed into a global fair trade movement, empowering artisans in over 20 countries by providing sustainable income opportunities.

Impact

Ten Thousand Villages impacts tens of thousands of artisans and their families by providing dignified opportunities to earn a fair wage. With over $110 million invested in artisan purchases over the last 19 years, the organization is committed to breaking the cycle of generational poverty.
