About Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja

Founded in 2004 by Puerto Rican artist Margarita Espada, Teatro Experimental Yerbabruja was established to fill the void of artistic spaces for Latinx artists in Long Island, New York. Over the past 17 years, this nonprofit has become a vital artistic catalyst, nurturing local, national, and international projects by multicultural and intergenerational artists. Named after the healing plant Yerbabruja, the organization thrives in adversity, serving marginalized BIPOC communities in Central Islip, Brentwood, and North Bay Shore.

Impact of Teatro Yerbabruja

Teatro Yerbabruja creates and produces diverse programming for underrepresented Latinx and Black artists, including performances, classes, and public art initiatives. These efforts contribute to downtown revitalization and extend to schools, social service agencies, and jails, fostering community engagement and cultural enrichment.
