About Symphony of the Mountains
Founded in 1946, Symphony of the Mountains began as a dream of a small group of musicians who sought to create a civic orchestra. Initially known as the Kingsport Symphony Orchestra, the ensemble started with just 27 musicians and has since grown to over 70 professional musicians. The first concert was a gift to the community, free of charge, showcasing the orchestra's commitment to accessibility and cultural enrichment.
Over the decades, Symphony of the Mountains has expanded its offerings to include classical concerts, engaging pops performances, and opportunities for young musicians through the Kingsport Symphony Youth Orchestra, established in 1965. The orchestra's dedication to education is evident in its outreach programs, such as Education in the Schools and Musicians in the Schools, which have been instrumental in fostering a love for music among students in the region.
In 2003, the orchestra rebranded as Symphony of the Mountains, reflecting its mission to serve the entire Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia region, encompassing approximately 450,000 citizens. Under the direction of conductor Cornelia Laemmli Orth, the orchestra continues to thrive, providing exceptional musical experiences that enrich the lives of audiences of all ages.
