Our Story

The Sunflower Star Laboratory, based in Monterey, is dedicated to researching and developing sustainable aquaculture methods for the conservation and reintroduction of the sunflower star (Pycnopodia helianthoides). Established in response to the devastating sea star wasting syndrome that began in 2013, this organization plays a crucial role in protecting coastal ecosystems. By collaborating with the Pycnopodia Recovery Work Group, the laboratory aims to restore sunflower stars to their historic range in California.

Impact

The decline of sunflower star populations has significantly contributed to the transformation of vibrant kelp forests into barren urchin-dominated areas. Restoring this keystone species is essential for rehabilitating California's kelp forests and safeguarding the diverse marine life that depends on them.
