Sunflower Bakery
EIN: 26-2797556 · Rockville, MD
Our Story
Sunflower Bakery began with a simple conversation between Laurie Wexler and Sara Portman Milner, driven by a shared passion for providing meaningful employment opportunities for individuals with learning differences. Established in June 2008, this nonprofit organization emerged from the need for skill-based training and employment pathways. With 501(c)(3) status achieved in May 2009, Sunflower Bakery has grown from a pilot program in a donated kitchen to a thriving community hub, including the opening of Café Sunflower in 2015 and the new Employee Training Center in 2020.
Impact
Since its inception, Sunflower Bakery has positively impacted the lives of over 550 teens and young adults with learning differences. Through specialized training in pastry arts and hospitality, the organization boasts a remarkable 90% completion rate, with 64% of graduates securing employment within six months of completing their training.
