Student Freedom Initiative

Our Story

Founded in 2020, the Student Freedom Initiative® (SFI) emerged from a vision to tackle the staggering $1.7 trillion student loan debt crisis. Inspired by Robert F. Smith's generous gift to Morehouse College graduates, SFI focuses on providing scalable solutions for students at Minority Serving Institutions (MSIs). Starting with nine HBCUs, SFI has expanded its reach to approximately 200,000 students across 62 MSIs in 22 states, the District of Columbia, and the US Virgin Islands.

Impact

By increasing access to education, SFI is committed to reducing the wealth gap and enhancing social and economic mobility for students attending MSIs. As of December 2023, SFI has positively impacted the lives of around 200,000 students, offering them pathways to success without the burden of overwhelming debt.
