Our Story

Street Poets Inc. was founded in 1995 by Chris Henrikson, who began volunteer-teaching poetry workshops at Camp Miller, a Los Angeles County Probation camp for boys. The initial workshop quickly gained popularity, leading to a waiting list of eager participants. Over the years, this initiative blossomed into a robust alumni network of over 100 formerly incarcerated youth, culminating in the establishment of Street Poets United. Today, Street Poets has expanded its outreach to various communities, including the San Carlos Apache and Navajo Reservations, and is set to open the Street Poets Center for Community, Culture & Wellness in 2024.

Impact

Street Poets harnesses the healing power of poetry and music to save lives, create community, and transform culture, effectively breaking the cycle of violence among at-risk and incarcerated youth.
