Our Story
In October 1982, a grassroots movement emerged in Southern Nevada to combat the devastating effects of driving under the influence. A coalition of DUI victims and concerned citizens united to eliminate the senseless deaths and injuries caused by impaired drivers. This group became a chartered chapter of Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD) in May 1983, focusing on assisting innocent DUI victims, supporting law enforcement, and advocating for legislative reform.
After years of successful advocacy, the Clark County Chapter of MADD faced policies that conflicted with its mission, including a lack of financial assistance for victims. In a bold move, the chapter severed its ties with MADD on December 31, 1993, and founded Stop DUI, Inc. in Las Vegas, Nevada. This organization is dedicated to providing immediate and direct financial assistance to innocent victims of drunk or drugged drivers.
Stop DUI, Inc. operates as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, relying primarily on fees from DUI offenders mandated to attend Victim Impact Panels. This unique funding model ensures that those responsible for DUI incidents contribute to the support of victims, rather than relying on grants or federal funding.
Since its inception, Stop DUI has distinguished itself as a leader in the fight against impaired driving, providing hundreds of thousands of dollars in assistance for funeral expenses, medical needs, and everyday living costs for victims. The organization also supports law enforcement through training and community awareness programs, reinforcing its commitment to public safety.
