Founded in 1994 by David Dumont and Billye Ericksen, Steinway Society – The Bay Area was born from a vision to enrich the classical music landscape in the Bay Area. Inspired by a post-concert reception in Atlanta, they recognized the need for a dedicated organization to support and promote piano performance and music education. With the support of local sponsors and private donors, the society quickly gained momentum, hosting intimate in-home concerts that captivated audiences.

In 1995, Steinway Society – The Bay Area was officially established as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization, allowing it to expand its reach and impact. The society has since become a vital part of the community, presenting world-class pianists and nurturing young talent through educational outreach programs. By collaborating with prestigious international piano competitions, including the International Van Cliburn Piano Competition, the society has brought numerous medalists to perform in the Bay Area, enriching the cultural fabric of the region.
