Our Story
Founded in November 2012, the Staten Island Interfaith & Community Long Term Recovery Organization (SILTRO) was established under FEMA's guidance in response to the devastation caused by Superstorm Sandy. This grassroots organization mobilizes vital information and resources to address the unmet needs of local communities during disasters, particularly those disproportionately affected by economic, racial-ethnic, or ability-based disparities.
Impact
Since its inception, SILTRO has made significant strides in disaster recovery. As of June 2020, the organization distributed $220,000 in emergency cash grants to Staten Island households impacted by COVID-19. Post-Sandy efforts include providing over $1.5 million in aid, donating more than $1 million in construction materials, and successfully rebuilding over 200 homes. Additionally, SILTRO has facilitated transitional and permanent housing for over 100 families and provided disaster case management for more than 500 families over five years.
