Our Story
Founded in 1952 by a dedicated group of parents, STAR Inc. Lighting the Way has been a beacon of hope for individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in Fairfield County, Connecticut. Over the decades, STAR has evolved to serve more than 700 individuals and their families, providing a comprehensive range of services from infancy through adulthood.
At the STAR Rubino Center in Norwalk, pediatric therapies are tailored to enhance development and minimize delays for infants and toddlers. With a team of skilled professionals, STAR offers physical, occupational, and speech therapies, ensuring that children reach their age-appropriate milestones.
As children transition to school, STAR continues to support families with advocacy and programming options, including Sports Buddies and JumpSTARs. For young adults graduating high school, STAR provides essential job training programs that lead to meaningful employment, fostering independence and social connections.
STAR’s commitment extends to adults with IDD, offering recreational programs, life enrichment opportunities, and residential support. Through partnerships with local chefs, artists, and educators, individuals can explore their interests in cooking, arts, and technology, enhancing their quality of life.
Recognizing the importance of technology, STAR has established an Assistive Technology Lab and Lending Library, providing assessments and devices that empower individuals with greater independence. Smart home technology is integrated into STAR’s residences, further promoting autonomy.
In 2024, STAR welcomed MaryGrace Giuliano as the new Executive Director, bringing fresh vision and leadership to continue the legacy of service and support for local families.
