About Stages

Founded in 1978, Stages is dedicated to making plays and telling stories that invite everyone to live more deeply and love more boldly. With a focus on sharing compelling human stories in intimate performance spaces, Stages allows audiences to connect with both the art on stage and the talented individuals who help create it. Over the years, Stages has grown to become Houston’s sixth largest nonprofit performing arts producer, and the largest outside of Houston’s downtown theater district.

Impact in the Community

Stages produces an average of 12 productions each year, totaling more than 430 performances and welcoming over 75,000 visitors each season. In January 2020, the organization opened The Gordy, a state-of-the-art three-theater venue that transforms how Houston artists and audiences experience theater. Almost all shows are rehearsed and constructed on-site in Houston, showcasing the exceptional talent of locally based artists and craftspeople.

Supporting Emerging Artists

For more than a decade, Stages has invested in nurturing emerging artists and administrators, many of whom have become leaders in the field. The organization offers various learning opportunities, including a student matinee series, performance and production internship programs for college students, and a summer conservatory for middle and high school students.

Community Engagement Initiatives

During the 2019-2020 season, nearly 20% of Stages audiences experienced performances free of charge through community engagement initiatives, such as free performances at Miller Outdoor Theatre and the Sin Muros: A Latinx Theater Festival, celebrating diverse voices and stories from Texas’s communities.
