About St. Vincent de Paul Society Bakersfield

For over seventy years, the Bakersfield St. Vincent de Paul Society has been a beacon of hope for the most vulnerable members of the community. Founded in the mid-1950s by Father Francis Trotter, this nonprofit organization has evolved from a small thrift store into a comprehensive support center for the poor and homeless in Kern County, California.

A Legacy of Compassion

The journey began in 1954 when a group of local businessmen and Father Trotter purchased a house at 425 E 19th St. to serve as a thrift store and homeless center. By 1958, the need for services had outgrown the original location, leading to the current site at 300 Baker Street. Over the decades, the center has expanded its facilities and services, including the addition of a mobile unit in 2005 and a state-of-the-art kitchen and hall in 2010.

Transforming Lives

Today, the Bakersfield St. Vincent de Paul Society provides hot meals, clothing, hygiene kits, and a safe environment for approximately 300 individuals daily. The center has transitioned from merely handing out sandwiches to offering comprehensive support, ensuring that those in need can find dignity and respect in a park-like setting.

Community Engagement

Each year, the society hosts an annual barbecue fundraiser that attracts over 800 attendees, raising thousands of dollars to support its mission. This event not only generates crucial funds but also raises awareness about the ongoing needs of the homeless and low-income individuals in the community.

Why Donations Matter

St. Vincent de Paul Society Bakersfield relies entirely on the generosity of individuals, organizations, and businesses, as it receives no government funding. Every donation, whether cash or cryptocurrency, directly impacts the lives of those who seek assistance. Contributions help provide essential services and ensure that no one in the community goes hungry or without shelter.
