Founded in 1966, St. Mary Advocates, Inc. has a rich history of supporting health and education in Hoboken, NJ. Originally established as the Saint Mary Hospital Woman’s Auxiliary, the organization has evolved to meet the changing needs of the community. With a commitment to raising funds and providing volunteer support, St. Mary Advocates has made a significant impact over the decades.

Our Journey

St. Mary Advocates began its journey with the mission to support Saint Mary Hospital during its rebuilding phase. Under the leadership of dedicated individuals like Mrs. Elsa Willenborg and Sister Felicitas Lichtenauer, the organization quickly became a vital part of the community. Through various fundraising events, including annual luncheons and fashion shows, the Auxiliary raised over $2.7 million for the hospital, demonstrating the power of community involvement.

In 1976, the Auxiliary expanded its membership to include men and changed its name to the Saint Mary Auxiliary. As the hospital transitioned to Hoboken University Medical Center, the organization continued its support, adapting to the evolving healthcare landscape. In 2011, following the hospital's acquisition by a for-profit entity, St. Mary Advocates was established as a new nonprofit corporation, focusing on aiding the community in health and education.

Impact in the Community

In 2023, St. Mary Advocates generated over $100,000 through its thrift store, directly benefiting local charities and scholarships. The thrift store, located at 536 Garden Street, not only provides affordable clothing and household items but also serves as a hub for community engagement and support.
