Our Story

Founded on April 21, 1950, the Springfield Municipal Opera Association began as a not-for-profit theatrical organization, transforming a 55-acre wheat field into a vibrant outdoor amphitheater. Despite facing significant challenges, including devastating fires in the 1960s, the Muni persevered. A test production of Bye Bye Birdie in 1964 reignited community support, allowing the Muni to rebuild and return to its lake site theater in 1965. Today, the Muni produces four shows each season, continuing to grow its audience and providing a cherished venue for families and friends to enjoy quality entertainment.

Impact

The Muni has entertained thousands each summer, becoming one of the largest community theaters in the Midwest. Completely self-supporting, it thrives without grants or tax dollars.
