About Southwest Organizing Project

Founded in 1996, the Southwest Organizing Project (SWOP) emerged from a commitment to challenge structural racism on the southwest side of Chicago. Recognizing that the responsibility for change lies with the entire community, SWOP fosters relationships across diverse backgrounds. Through community organizing, SWOP creates spaces for families to share their stories, identify common interests, and celebrate the rich traditions that make them unique.

Impact in the Community

SWOP believes that those closest to the issues are best positioned to develop solutions. By engaging local institutions, faith groups, and schools, SWOP has become a powerful voice for over 40,000 residents in neighborhoods like Chicago Lawn, Gage Park, and West Lawn. The organization has achieved remarkable results, including a 91% decrease in vacant properties and a 73% reduction in crime.

Why Donate to SWOP?
