Our Story

Founded in November 1986 by Matt and Robin Rhoades, Southside Unlimited began as the Southside Art Center with just five staff members and 25 participants. The center quickly became a vibrant hub for artistic expression, allowing artists to develop their individual projects and showcase their talents through community exhibitions. In 1993, the establishment of a co-operative gallery marked a significant milestone, evolving into the Southside Art Center Gallery, which has since gained recognition for its contributions to the local art scene.

In response to community needs, the curriculum evolved over the years. The AIM program transitioned to Community Volunteerism, where participants engaged in meaningful volunteer work at local organizations such as the YMCA, SPCA, and Red Cross. This initiative not only fostered skill development but also empowered participants to become valuable community members.

In 1998, Southside launched the Passage program, catering to individuals facing communication challenges. This program has successfully supported participants in overcoming behavioral obstacles, enabling them to thrive in their communities. By 2006, Southside expanded its mission into the recycling industry, creating Southside Recycling, which currently employs 25 participants.

In 2016, the organization restructured its services to better meet the needs of individuals seeking job opportunities and skill development. The Work of Art Studios and Galleries opened to the public in January 2019, marking a new chapter in Southside's commitment to artistic expression and community engagement.
