Our Story

Founded in 1981, Southside Community Land Trust (SCLT) emerged from the collaborative efforts of South Providence residents and Hmong refugees, alongside three visionary Brown University graduates. Together, they transformed an abandoned lot into the Somerset Garden, the area’s first community garden, which not only enhanced local diets but also revitalized a neighborhood plagued by neglect and crime. Over the years, SCLT has expanded its reach, transforming nearly 32 acres into community gardens and farms across Rhode Island, including a 50-acre rural farm that supports 20 small farm businesses.

Impact

SCLT’s programs and gardens serve urban neighborhoods where access to fresh produce is limited. Annually, the garden network produces food for approximately 1,200 individuals and their families. In 2023 alone, 23,250 people benefited from SCLT's initiatives, showcasing the profound impact of community-driven agriculture.
