Our Story

Founded in 1903 by Emily Pruden, Southmountain Children and Family Services began as the Golden Industrial Institute, dedicated to educating and equipping children in rural North Carolina. Over the decades, the organization transformed from an educational institute to an orphanage during the Great Depression, eventually adopting the name Southmountain to honor its location. Today, SCFS proudly operates North Carolina's first and only foster community, serving families and children through its Children’s Advocacy Centers across 16 counties.

Impact

SCFS has profoundly impacted the lives of countless children and families by providing a safe haven and essential life-changing programs. The organization focuses on healing children from violent home situations, offering services aimed at family reunification and child advocacy.
