In 2017, the Texas Department of Transportation initiated plans to reconstruct I-35E, presenting a unique opportunity to address historical injustices. Through community engagement, the design emerged to include a ‘deck’ over the highway, transforming it into Southern Gateway Park. This park will feature over five acres of green space, similar to Dallas’ Klyde Warren Park, aimed at revitalizing low-income neighborhoods.
Southern Gateway Park will connect two of Dallas' lowest-income census tracts, tackling mobility challenges and fostering economic investment. This initiative is set to enhance access to essential amenities, bridging communities for mutual benefit.
