Our Story
The Southeast Lighthouse Foundation was established in 1986 to lead the rescue campaign of the historic Southeast Lighthouse, built in 1873. After a decade of advocacy, including three Acts of Congress and $2 million in funding, the lighthouse was successfully relocated in 1993 to protect it from erosion. This iconic structure symbolizes the resilience of the Block Island community and its rich maritime heritage.
Impact
By relocating the Southeast Lighthouse, the foundation has preserved a vital piece of maritime history, ensuring its operation as a historic landmark. Today, the lighthouse serves as a museum and tourist attraction, enriching local heritage and education.
