Our Story
Lighthouse was established in 2019 through the merger of Lighthouse of Oakland County and South Oakland Shelter, combining over 80 years of experience in serving the community. Originally founded in 1972, Lighthouse began with a group of dedicated volunteers providing food and clothing from a local church. South Oakland Shelter, established in 1985, was created by seven religious congregations to address the urgent needs of families facing homelessness. Together, Lighthouse aims to be a beacon of hope, offering vital services such as food, shelter, and housing assistance to those in need.
Impact
In 2022, Lighthouse served 207 households through various housing programs, including 62 families in the Rapid Re-Housing Program. Thousands of children and adults benefit from our emergency shelter, food assistance, and follow-up care, helping them regain stability and self-sufficiency.
