Our Story

Founded by Shirley Ruch in 2016, South Fork Bakery was born from a passion to create meaningful employment opportunities for adults with disabilities on the South Fork. With over 30 years of experience as a speech and language pathologist, Ruch recognized the challenges faced by her former students with autism as they transitioned into adulthood. Starting with just six employees, the bakery has grown to employ 16 individuals with autism and other disabilities, alongside a professional baker and a special education teacher. Operating out of Scoville Hall in Amagansett, South Fork Bakery became a nonprofit in 2018, dedicated to empowering individuals through work.

Impact

Since its inception, South Fork Bakery has provided meaningful, paid employment to dozens of adults with disabilities. The Launch program further extends this mission by identifying job opportunities outside the bakery, partnering with employers throughout Suffolk County.
